In July of 2025, my film crew and I decided to embark on a difficult task: write, produce, and edit a short film in 4 weeks. We titled this project "The Scramble". We made it even more difficult for ourselves; we split our group into two and put crew roles into a hat to draw for our position. My pick was Producer/AD for group A.
With 1 week of pre-production, I was certainly scrambling. The first thing I did was make a mock up schedule for the week to ensure we were prepared for our production day in one week. My director got to work and churned out a fun and comedic script in just a couple days. I got to work solidifying locations, planning schedules, organizing rides, determining budget (we each contributed about $15), and communicating with our crew of 12 (including actors).
Production day was tough while still being incredibly fun. Our DP had a lot of shots planned, and, in about 12 hours, we shot around 34 of those. The script required a lot of movement, which meant giving the director time to block, as well as the DP time to rehearse complicated camera movement. I had to be on my toes the whole day, figuring out ways to pivot the schedule and fit everything in. But we finished on time and got everything we needed!
We premiered the film 3 weeks later, and I am happy with the finished product. For the project being a "Scramble", it certainly taught me a lot about producing and AD-ing, and I came out of the project with new experiences under my belt. I am proud of the work I did - staying on budget and staying on schedule!
